Revised Data Sets in the Archive

Summary of the Revised Data Sets

Link to Revised Data Search Form

This section deals with the large data sets that have been revised and subsequesntly re-submitted to the WOUDC data archive. These data sets typically represent several years of data or perhpas are the complete time series for a particular station. Information about what stations and data types have been revised is contained in the year the data were submitted. Records about data revisiosn have been kept since 1995.

Introduction

Revised data sets not only represent a continued commitment on the part of the data originator to submit the best possible data to the WOUDC, but these data are essential to the ongoing trend panel studies which convene every two to four years. As technologies and processing algorithms improve the need for more current, long-term time series of spatial data are often revisited to compare with satellite data such that both sets of data may be improved.

What is a Revision?

A "revised" or re-evaluated data set is defined by the WOUDC as the end product of data analysis that has examined this data set (usually from a single instrument located at the same site) in one or more of the following methods; updated instrument constants based on a calibration or instrument intercomparision, comparison of the long term trends with stations in the same spatial proximity, comparison with other like instruments or comparison with space borne platforms such as satellite data.

Some data sets such as total column ozone have very specific and clearly stated methods for evaluating long term trends. These studies often identify site or instrument specific data sets that are considered anomalous and require re-evaluating the data by means of one or more of the aforementioned techniques. And so the process of re-evaluation continues. The WOUDC has a long history of processing and reporting those stations that have re-submited these revised (updated) data sets.

Summary of the Revised Data Sets

These reports summarise the revision history based on Category (data type) and temporal range. Platforms ("stations") are listed by platform id and name.
